Review Text

A kaleidoscope, turning quickly: 8:45 a.m., Berlin - a Reichstag deputy watches cavalry regiments pulling out. . . ; Paris - quiet has followed quick mobilization, shops are shuttered, queues are forming; Dieppe - British and American tourists wait desperately for boats; Firth of Clyde - an excursion on schedule; "A Country Parsonage, England" - "There was little time to think of war. . . because a huge charity fete was taking place"; London - drunks and vagrants in the police cells, a call to "ENGLISH GENTLEMEN" to form "CORPS MOUNTED CAVALRY," Scottish naval reservists arriving cheerfully; Canterbury - 2nd day of cricket week, summer camps for civilian volunteers dispersing, routine barrack-room inspection for regulars. While at 9 a.m. at Ballplatz, Vienna; Rome; and the Foreign Office, London. . . . There's irony and insight between the lines (or within the ellipses) but neither the bulletins nor the sketches are sufficiently developed to cohere and the discontinuity is dizzying.
