Darren Richards opened his eyes to find himself duct-taped to a chair with a crossbow pointing at him. Behind the crossbow is a hooded figure wearing a black-faced, round-eyed gas mask. The figure tells him what Darren knows: that he stole a car, drove it recklessly while under the influence of drugs and killed a woman and her baby. His solicitor managed to get the case thrown out of court on a technicality so he has not paid for his crime. That, says the figure, cannot be allowed to happen.

Darren turns to his right. Next to him are his girlfriend and their baby daughter. Both similarly taped to a chair, gagged. It's very simple, explains the figure. Either you die or your girlfriend and child die. But someone has to pay. A life for a life. The choice is Darren's...

Review quote

Seriously scary. * Mark Billingham * If Tania Carver doesn't creep you out, you should seek professional help. * Val McDermid * A near-perfect crime novel, which will keep you guessing into the wee small hours, and confirms Tania Carver as a bright new talent when it comes to edge-of-your-seat suspense. * Bella on CHOKED * Gruesome and fast-paced, with Carver's trademark staccato sentences and plenty of suspense, this is definitely a white-knuckle read. * Guardian on CHOKED *

Truth or Dare ¢?? Seriously Twisted Detective Inspector Phil Brennan and his wife Marina Esposito are back in Truth or Dare by Tania Carver. This is a brilliant psychological police thriller that asks some serious questions of the victims and tests the police to the fullest. One thing I can say is that Tania Carver is one seriously twisted woman and I love her I wonder how dark her mind is. She must have some very scary nightmares because in her writing she digs deep and touches a few nerves. DI Phil Brennan is head of the Major Incident Squad in Birmingham and off duty when he receives a telephone call telling him where to find some people who may or may not be alive. He finds a criminal alive just his girlfriend and daughter next to him strapped to a chair. There is no forensic evidence however hard his team look. The perpetrator calls himself ¢??The Lawgiver¢?? and tells the police that he is despensing justice where the courts have failed the people. At the same time Brennan¢??s wife is over at a Mental Health Hospital for Essex Police assessing a woman who is not who she says she is but dangerous all the same. Both stories will clash in to one whether Brennan and Esposito like it or not. The Lawgiver leaves no trace even when he works right under the Police¢??s noses somehow he gets his victims and leaves no clue to who he is and where he has gone. All that is clear is the victims will be given a choice of life and death and justice will be dispensed on their decision. As the bodies pile up including Police Brennan has to hope that Esposito¢??s profile is correct and that the lawgiver will unravel and make mistakes. As the two stories colide the pace picks up and the twisted story really kicks in to life. Each turned page is in the hope someone else is not killed or injured but there will always be collateral damage, including the local gangs in Birmingham become involved. Truth or Dare is a wonderfully twisted story that makes you wonder what will be the next sacrifice and who will be the next victim. All I can say is that this has been written by someone with a seriously disturbed mind and if she is not disturbed then I would not want to get on the wrong side of Tania Carver. A fabulous scary and twisted psychological thriller written by an award winning author who is on top of her more
