Review Text

Wildsmith makes one continuous narrative out of several traditional anecdotes connected with the "true cross," beginning in the garden of Eden where Adam's son Seth obtains a sprig from the Tree of Life to plant in his dying father's mouth. The tree that grows from it has healing power; a bridge made from its wood evokes an awed prophecy from the Queen of Sheba; her vision comes true when the wood is used for Jesus' cross; and the cross is found by Helena two centuries later when it brings a dead boy to life. It's unlikely that many children around today have grandmothers still cherishing their own tiny chips of the "true cross"; nevertheless, Wildsmith does rely on a preconditioned response to Jesus (whose story he doesn't go into) for whatever impact or resonance the chronicle might have. The illustrations also have a foregone, if not stale, quality, despite a sort of festive formality: they seem not so much responses to the story as well-made decorations. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
