Then none could count the passing day his own, Yet all its minutes had intenser life; And oft, when evening darkened, and the night Drew densest veil, friend met with friend to pray For faith to conquer so, and sought afar Some desert spot, beyond the paths of men, Where, like the ancient patriarch, to strive Till break of day; and oft the watcher sat F orgetful, till the sun himself gave sign. The sabbath brightened on the silent waste: A flood of light, no rippling sound of wave, Nor voice of wind. The tranquil dawn outpoured Its glory silent on the skies and earth, As when God spake, and first the king of day, Orbed in the radiance of His mighty word, Did silent homage, and like angel wings His beams swept noiseless the new firmament.
