About James P Harrington

Discover the power of believing in yourself with James P. Harrington's inspirational new memoir, Triumph of a Shanty Irishman. Born in the mining district neighborhood of "Muckerville" in Butte, Montana, Harrington faces hardships most people can only imagine. Rheumatic fever at the age of five spares his life but leaves him with a permanent heart murmur. Forced to miss a significant amount of grammar school because of it-and a victim of bullying due to his frail frame when he does go-Harrington finds little comfort in the miner's shack he calls home. Alcohol provides temporary relief but becomes a saboteur to his success. But despite these obstacles, and with the encouragement of his parents and teachers at Catholic school, he is able to find the drive to achieve his dreams. From his days working hard jobs, drinking, and working the pool tables for some extra cash and learning to box for self-defense, on to eventually earning a law degree and raising seven children, he never loses sight of a better future. Through the use of prose, poetry, and photographs, Harrington-now retired from a forty-five-year law career and grandfather to seventeen kids-shares the events that shaped him into the man he is today with honesty and humor.show more
