Review Text

In Breen's new story, it's back to the race-track world, its horses, legends, owners, hangers-on and California track-announcer Jack Brogan (Listen for the Click). Jack is much intrigued by the death of gloomy trainer Denny Kilbride in a cliffside fall, and by a vaguely threatening letter signed "Old Rosebud" that was in his pocket. Others in racing have gotten similar letters - millionaire stable-owner Van Masterson, Jack's friends Arleen and Bill Holman, and TV star Martin Fine, along with Masterson's ex-wife Bettina, now married to trainer Emmett Winslow. But no one's taking all this too seriously - until Masterson is murdered on the eve of the Kentucky Derby and Bettina Winslow is found dead at the Preakness. Who's going to be next at Belmont, third leg of the Triple Crown? Breen's saga is jampacked with racing lore, but there's plenty of astute detection on Jack's part as he moves into big-time announcing and finally penetrates the secret of "Old Rosebud." An odds-on bonanza for track fans, adequately entertaining for others, and the author's best so far. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
