Review Text

"When I think of my future self and the futures of Ima Dean and Romey I think - This is not enough." So Mary Call Luther of Where the Lilies Bloom, now sixteen, begins to feel imprisoned by the success of her plan to keep the Luther children together. Ima Dean and Romey, less than grateful for the flinty, disciplined subsistence she offers, yearn for television and a cushier life with sister Devola and her husband Kiser Pease. And two suitors, especially Thad Yancey from a wealthy Virginia family, offer possibilities for a new direction. Then Jack Parsons, a little boy found in a wooden cage by the creek - abandoned there, he says, by a "Widder Man" - attaches himself to Mary Call with a devotion she resists but cannot shake. And Gaither Graybeal, the local boy who courts by mopping her floors and sewing dresses for Ima Dean, crystallizes her conviction that children are "what it's all about" when he abandons Mary Call to a roiling creek in order to rescue Jack first. It's a stubbornly unfashionable resolution, and one mixed with more than a little regret, but it suits Mary Call. Though she risks sounding more like a septuagenarian mountain philosopher than a teenager two young men are competing for, her dead-sure sense of self and confidence in "the opinions I craft and practice" keep her on a course that's straight and truthful as ever.
