Unwittingly dogged by financial problems he becomes the victim of a psychopath - or, if preferred, a sociopath by the corruption prevalent at all levels of the society - who contrives to have him incarcerated following a land dispute. After surviving the hell of Thailand's prisons, for more than a year, he is acquitted on impartial and irrefutable evidence. The courts find that his accusers had lied and police investigations had corruptly obstructed the course of justice.
Now free, he endeavours to rebuild his business and meet his company's obligations aided by his former sales manager but falls foul of two brothers in the powerful Thai Mafia who conspire to steal his company. Coerced into co-operating, threatened with being thrown back in prison, brutal attackers then leave him by the roadside to die. However he is found and hospitalised, though with Traumatic Brain Injury and unable to move, speak or swallow. The story follows the efforts of his family supported by the ex-sales manager, to obtain justice for him and recover the company.
They face shortcomings in the Thai legal system, the Mafia's financial power to influence police and judiciary as well as difficulties in funding the fight. With no support from the British Government they gain the unexpected help of a former high-ranking official, a long-standing friend of the former sales manager, who is keen to stamp out corruption in his country. Bolstered by funds provided by two investors in the hotel development project, the family relentlessly pursues its efforts to secure justice and obtain the convictions they seek.
This is a tale of envy, greed, corruption and murder. Exposed are the serious risks and dangers for any ill-informed foreign (farang) investor or any unsuspecting tourist of falling victim, or even of being murdered, in a totally corrupt society. The obstacles to finding justice are insurmountable without, as is likely, there is not the benefit of honest high-level support.
