Review Text

This is an uneven, and baffling because it is so uneven, collection of some ninety poems. It is the author's second book; her first since In an Iridescent Time. The themes are variable and predictable - death, children, apartment living, country life, friendship, childhood memories. Some of the poems (cf. "The Sun with Mr. Parker's Help") seem to want to be short stories and there is a strong tendency toward prosiness. In fact there is only one poem ("The Plan") that exploits this tendency effectively so that language, rhythm and theme all synchronize quite beautifully. Many of the poems are verbose and would be more revealing if they could show instead of tell. Thus their major weakness is an overdependency on words and an unwillingness to trust metaphor. In "Behind the Facade' Ruth Stone is at her best and there is an ease here one would have liked to have seen in the many other poems. (Kirkus Reviews)
