At Killaloe is a bridge over the Shannon of 19 arches, below it is a'ledge of rocks, which revents the navigation of t-his river up-to Ear-gb D: rg.; here is a confiderable salmon and eel fishery, but there is nothing beautiful in the town except the iituation; the river is navigable to Carricl: -am Slmrmon; there are many antient buildings in and about this town; the cathedral is a gothic edilice in form of a cross, with the ilecple in the centre, supported by four arches; it is about zoo feet in length, the spun of the roof go in the clear-, the E. window is large and rine; it was built by Donalrs, king of Limerick in ixbo, there is a building near it, once the oratory of St. Malua, there is another of the same kind in an island on the Shannon, having marks of slill higher antiquity; the fee house of the bilhop is at Csarisfard, near Killalaz; Clarisford was the old English name given bv the firsl settlcrs, in or about the time of Thomas de Clare, earl of Gloucefter, and was so called from being the onl ford over the Slzannon into the co. of Cor-I At Killaloe adjoining the cathedral, are said to be yet some reli s of the mansoleum of Brim Born: at the Vifeflern end was the entrance, now closed up, but the arch is visible, supported by two pillars, which tho' low, are covered with capitals of the Ianicorder; which is a convincing proof of the elegance of the building, in so early a time.
