Review Text

The Barrets live in a basement apartment in the 21-story insurance building where their disabled father is a janitor's helper, and one day when both parents are out Donald, seven, snitches the key and takes the elevator up to the executive penthouse with its lovely roof garden - called "Top of the World" officially, but "heaven" to Donald. Ten-year-old Cathy, left in charge, is terrified, for not only does the head super already resent their presence in the building, but just then the old, esteemed president of the company arrives unexpectedly for lunch in the executive suite. What ensues, as a giddily disobedient Donald leads Cathy, the president, and the super higher and higher - and finally, losing his nerve, draws Cathy out onto an unprotected walkway attached to the company's electric sign - will have readers not on the edges of their chairs, which will seem far too dizzying, but curled up tight in acrophobic terror. Unfortunately Townsend ends it with the benign company president turning the executive parking lot into a playground for the Barrets, but you can overlook this false note for the chance to share Cathy's fears and bravery.
