Tishie, A Child of Texas
This personal memoir tells the story of a child, three years old, who was taken, along with three siblings, to live in the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs Home for Children in Corsicana Texas in 1943. From a family unable to care for them, they found shelter from the outside world in this place of refuge, supported by caring, generous people from the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, an altruistic and benevolent fraternal organization. With the motto of "Friendship, Love and Truth" their philosophy is "To Improve and Elevate the Character of Mankind" to "Visit the Sick, Relieve the Distressed, Bury the Dead and Educate the Orphan" and this is where my story begins. It is told in narrative form, with sections alternating between the voice of a child and the voice of an adult remembering her childhood and the family she longed to be with; an emotional journey of day-to-day life, trying to make sense of it all.
