Review Text

Dr. Harriet Berry, a researcher, is another one of those Life Meddlers (1970) whose cell regeneration discovery at a small government facility results in a cancer cure. While Oscar, the head of the establishment (her lover - both Harriet and Oscar have been widowed for years), has had another reason for resentment - the Nobel-prize winning, life-saving heart procedure of another associate. Oscar is a rancorous type. The press breaks the story of Harriet's "miracle man" and she is inundated on all sides and coerced by a new rich man's "business consortium" to come to work for them - the extra incentive being free care for her dying father-in-law. This gives the story, again an instrument for a few ideas, a chance to discuss rich versus poor, the extension of life and perpetual care of the old - let alone what to do with them, etc. - although Harriet's decision (to stay with what she has because it's more comfortable) is just carpet-slippered compromise. She (and her sex) deserves more than the second best alternatives and third-raters she's left with. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
