The vacuum is usually maintained from 6 to 10 hours, after which the creosote is pumped in under pressure and the timber allowed to absorb the specified amount. The plant has a capacity of about 5200 feet in twenty-four hours. The striking feature of this plant is the fact that all machinery is situated over the retorts. The engine room is built of hollow tile and together with measuring tanks completely encases the retorts. The advantage claimed by this arrangement is the complete insulation of the retorts and the consequent conservation of the heat energy. The plant is so arranged that the charges are made up and introduced at one end of the retorts and withdrawn at the other. The retort cars are of the suspension type, about '8'feet in length with semi-circular frames. The loads run lnpits about three feet lower than the loading deck, while the car itself is suspended from the rails, which are flush with the deck. This plan allows great facility in loading. For piling, two or more cars are utilized and the trucks connected by chains. All piling is handled by electric cranes. A fiveton crane makes up the charges and serves the three retorts. Another five-ton crane handles the untreated piles as they are delivered at the plant. An 80-foot, 8-ton crane is utilized in the yard for One of the largest creosoting plants in the United State is located at Eagle Harbor, VVash., under the management of the Pacific Creosotlng Co, of Seattle. more
