A remarkable innovator, Louis Comfort Tiffany (American, 18481933) drew on a vast, varied visual repertoire acquired during his travels in America, Europe, and Africa. He was deeply moved by the magnificent antique windows of France, but he brought a more painterly approach to stained glass, joining with his rival John La Farge to demand of art glassTiffany trademarked the name Favrilea shifting, shimmering, mercurial quality. Though influenced by the work being produced in England by the disciples of William Morristhe Arts and Crafts schoolhe was no less inspired by Japanese ceramics, Moorish architecture, and Byzantine mosaics. Twelve of Tiffanys exquisite stained glass windows are presented here.
