Review Text

Since The Bridges of Madison County so spectacularly hit the literary headlines its author has received letters from people all over the world asking what happened next in the lives of Robert Kincaid and Francesca Johnson - the couple whose lives briefly but passionately fused. In this sequel their questions are answered. It is now 16 years since Robert and Francesca parted. Robert, an itinerant photographer, has continued to travel in some of the loneliest, most spectacular parts of the world and to be absorbed in his job, which has brought him a great deal of professional satisfaction and many awards. After a short-lived marriage which died of neglect, and a brief but less intense affair, he continues to live alone, and remember. Francesca, a widow with grown-up children, still lives at the farm, and finds her thoughts increasingly turning back through the years to those four days with Robert. Her daily walk often takes her to Roseman Bridge, for she feels there is always the slenderest chance that one day she will find Robert there. When time and circumstance come together, the urge to travel back to Madison County, Iowa, becomes overwhelming and Robert sets out on the thousand country roads which separate them. The author writes in his Final Notes, 'So we end a book of endings.' But is that strictly true? Along the way there has been a totally unanticipated new beginning - a surprise for the reader as well as those involved. A gentle story with an unexpectedly powerful grip. (Kirkus UK)
