Review Text

This utilitarian looking book with splotched and grainy black and white illustrations is not the social studies lesson it appears to be, even though its subject is a six year-old boy in Tanzania who wakes up one morning determined to ride an elephant and prove how grown-up he is. Before the day is over Thomas has predictably run away from school, found his elephant, and returned on its back to lead all the children in a grand parade. Rose's departures from formula come not in the plot but in the offhand incidentals: the names of Thomas' 19 older siblings (an alphabetical order including Beautiful Betsy, Grace One and Grace Two, I. Jason, Maria Giggles and Peter the Great) and his classmates (Susan B. Anthony Jones, Really Noisy Richard, James Whoopee), in the children's songs ("Carry Me Back to Tanzania") and in Thomas' vocabulary in directing the elephant ("Giddy-ap! Mush! Shake a leg. Get a move on. Let's go"). Rose's wish to jazz up a dull genre is understandable, but it's a strange land he projects in this whimsical mix of exotic eccentricity and colloquial Americana.
