Description

This is not a story of forgiveness... The mystery of their best friend's murder drives four girls to destroy the Gregory family. Emily Thorne would be proud. Everyone at Hawthorne Lake Country Club saw Willa Ames-Rowan climb into a boat with James Gregory, the Club's heir apparent. And everyone at Hawthorne Lake Country Club watched him return. Alone. They all know he killed her. But none of them will say a word. The Gregory family is very, very good at making problems go away. Enter the W.A.R.--the war to avenge Willa Ames-Rowan. Four girls. Four very different motives for justice and revenge, and only one rule: destroy the Gregory family at any cost.show more

About Lisa Roecker

Lisa and Laura Roecker are sisters-turned-writing partners with a passion for good books, pop culture, and Bravo programming. Not necessarily in that order. A prepubescent obsession with Lois Duncan and their mother's insistence that they read "Men Are Just Desserts" inspired "This is WAR." The sisters live in Cleveland, Ohio, in separate residences. Their husbands wouldn't agree to a duplex. Cyberstalking is always encouraged at lisa-laura.blogspot.com and @landlroecker on Twitter.show more

Our customer reviews

(Source: I received a digital copy of this book for free on a read-to-review basis. Thanks to Soho Teen and Edelweiss.) The body of Willa Ames Rowan has just been dragged from the lake, after a boating trip gone wrong. People are saying that her death was an accident, but her sister Marge, her friends Sloane and Lina, and an employee's daughter from the country club - Rose, know that it was no accident. Willa was killed by the James Gregory, his brother Trip helped cover it up, and their grandfather threw money at the problem to make it go away. Marge, Rose, Sloane, and Lina make a pact though - to bring the Gregory boys to justice, and to make sure that everyone knows just how dirty the Gregory's really are. Who really killed Willa though? How can the girls ever get proof of what happened? And how will they get their revenge? This was an interesting murder-mystery story that reminded me of a cross between 'John Tucker Must Die' and 'Pretty Little Liars'. The four girls in this story had two reasons for trying to get even with the Gregory's - 1, because they believed that James had killed Willa, and 2, because they were sick of the Gregory's getting away with whatever they wanted just because they were rich. I totally got why the girls did what they did, and I also felt their frustration that justice wouldn't be served just because the Gregory's had money, and paid their way out of their problems. I also got their frustration when everything they did to try and dirty the boy's reputation or to get them disinherited failed miserably. I liked the storyline in this book, and it was pretty frustrating to see the Gregory boys getting away with murder. The storyline reminded me of a cross between 'John Tucker Must Die' - with the girls plotting revenge, and 'Pretty Little Liars' - with the mystery of who really killed Willa? Strangely enough, some of the girl's plans in this story even mimicked those in - 'John Tucker Must Die', such as dosing the boys with hormone pills to make them grow breasts. I think the best part of this book for me was the mystery over who really killed Willa, which wasn't revealed until the end. As it turned out things didn't happen exactly as I expected, but the real events weren't far off what we were told to assume at the beginning of the book. I did like the fact that we got a view of the murder from Willa's point of view at the end though. The ending was quite interesting actually, but did seem to go against everything that the girls had been working on. It was like they were made to see things from a certain point of view, and to stop their efforts to bring the killer to justice, even when they had solid proof of who killed Willa! Bit of an odd one, but it did fit with the theme of 'money talks'. Overall; an interesting YA murder mystery - think 'John Tucker Must Die' meets 'Pretty Little Liars'. 7 out of 10.show more
