Review Text

The thing of it is that successful songwriter Amos McCracken is half Jewish and he's never been able to admit it to anyone and that he hates his mother-in-law; and that Lila, his seductive young wife has a bitchy streak just like her mother and hates Amos' analyst; and that their engaging youngster Jessica is right in the middle of their nonstop and sometimes squalid squabbling. This goes on in London where Jessica loses her security object, a rag doll, and in Rome where Lila gets hung up all over again on the gold watch her father never bought her, and finally in Venice where they decide to stop...and start again.... A short novel, what there is of it is articulate, abrasive, funny, intimate, notional and unresolved. In other words, ephemera??. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
