Care is shown in a studied regard for details. Carelessness betrays itself in an avoidance of dandified precision, and in a certain easy freedom that is essentially virile. A man's dress must, above all, be manly. Just as soon as it borders on the etfeminate, it becomes foppish and offensive. For this reason such vagaries as goldcrested waistcoat buttons, braided evening coats, white gloves with backs heavily embroidered in black silk, pointed--toe pumps and the like cannot be regarded as expressing true fashion. They are personal eccentricities which, while not to be utterly condemned, savor too much of the "pampered exquisite" to be acceptable to the athletic spirits of the day. Simplicity is the parent of good taste in dress, as in art, decoration and every field of human endeavor. Gray braided cutaway coats in shades like fog and smoke are very good form.
