At first I was ambiguous about this book. I found the first few chapters cliched but as I progressed further I became fascinated by the lyrical narrative style . It was strange. the way I was drawn by the narrative, which in some ways was disturbing, but totally absorbed by the story.
As I finished this book I was left in an emotional abyss. Was this one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read or was this a masterpiece of innovative writing. I found this book to be provokingly moving emotionally and intellectually.show more

I made the mistake of seeing the movie before reading the book. Still I decided to read the book and I'm glad I did, it's incredible. Now from the fact that death itself draws most of the book is brilliant and very well spent. One becomes attached to the characters and beyond the sadness of the story as it was difficult to live in that era, it is a book that should be read once.show more

I had seen the preview for the movie and had high hopes for this book. However, the format didn't work for me and I found it a difficult book to finish- and when I did, the ending was a disappointment. I certainly would not recommend it, but it wasn't totally terrible. Aspects of it were great- the character of Liesel is a likeable one- but being narrated by Death and given a number of forward-warnings made it a lot less likable.show more
