Not illustrated. 1904 edition. Excerpt: ... and one-third of all grain. The annual rainfall is about 36 inches, and is usually much greater in the fall, winter and early spring than summer. A total failure of crops was never known. Being well supplied with water, and a high hill country, the boll weevil has never given the people of the county much concern. According to the tax assessment for 1903, there were in the county 12.108 horses and mules. 40,529 cattle, 16.791 sheeo and 4335 hogs. The Brazos, Bosque and many of the smaller streams have sufficient fall to simply water power, and all abound with fisll in great quantities. There are 79 miles of railway in the county, the Gulf, Colorado & Santa Fe passing from north to south 39 miles, and the Texas Central passing from east to west 40 miles. These two lines cross at Morgan, seven miles north of Meridian, affording good railway communication to the larger part of the county. In addition to these lines of road, another road will be built from east to west through the county by way of Meridian during the next year, as provision has already been made for its construction. This will add 50 miles. The school facilities are good, there being an academy at Meridian, owned by a private corporation, a Lutheran academy at Clifton, owned by that denomination, 75 public schools for whites, 6 public schools for colored and 5 independent school districts. The scholastic population of the county is 4500. The churches having organizations in the county are Baptist, Missionary and Primitive, Methodist, Christian, Lutheran, Cumberland Presbyterian and PresbyteriP"" The health of the county is unsurpassed in Texas.
