An insight into German theology requires a study of the parties which prevail. As the external bond of union found in the state church is but a loose one, and as the investigation in theuniversities is free, it is not strange that there is great diversity in theological instruction, in literature, and in belief. The various historic currents which have come down from past ages, and are modified by the movements of the day, are subjected to new research and enter into new combinations. Theological thought is thus, as the Germans say, "fluid," it is living and moving, not stagnant or petrified. The historic and individual, the past and present currents, so intermingle that it is impossible to keep them distinct. In certain schools and tendencies particular historic currents are, however, more marked than others. So many elements enter into a movement that even a general analysis cannot be attempted. The diversity in theological movement is so great that only general classifications are possible. Even the various parties in the church furnish only broad outlines of the mos marked tendencies. Wide differences prevail in the same party, some inclining more to the left, others to the right; and many theologians belong to no party, but occupy independent positions. The differences prevalent in the same state church pertain to the very principles of religion and the fundamentals of Christianity; to doctrine, to church organization, to worship, and to methods of Christian work.
