Not illustrated. 1908 edition. Excerpt: ...on reaching home. In the negative, however, the vibration is only slightly reproduced, although sufficiently to spoil it for purposes of enlargement. I am making another trip to Eastbourne shortly with a view to telephotographing this lighthouse satisfactorily, and also to getting some good long distance pictures of the place itself from a bend in the Beachy Head carriage road. The latter were impossible at the time of my February visit owing to the haze. April and May should be grand months for Telephotography at Eastbourne which I think ought to afford at least a dozen good subjects. I did some fair work from the pier-head, a telephotograph of one of the hotels at 7 magnifications (page 12) being technically pretty sound. This was taken with a 7m. positive and a ijin. negative, the Sanderson being full' racked out, but without the added extension given by the swing front. The original negative is absolutely undistinguishable as regards quality from one taken with an ordinary lens, and, although the definition has hardly the crispness produced by a first-class anastigmat, an enlargement of four diameters is quite possible. That would make the total magnification twenty-eight diameters, and a "picture"--I use inverted commas to anticipate sarcastic comment--would be produced, 2oin. by i6in., which could only be obtained direct with a lens of rather more than 16 feet focal length. Not bad for a 5x4 camera, eh? THE "WISH TOWER," EASTBOURNE. Telephotograph at about 10 magnifications from same standpoint as the view above. By Owen Wheeler.
