Adjoining the Record Office is that ominously named structure, the Bloody Tower, formerly called the Garden Tower, but which becoming the scene of some lamentable tragedies, won for itself its later and more fearful title. Here it is supposed that Edward V., and his brother the Duke of York, were smothered, by command of their uncle Richard, Duke of Gloucester; this, with other deeds of blood which were perpetrated here, led to its being called, towards the end of Elizabeth's reign, the Bloody Tower. The Tower Chapel, dedicated to St. Peter ad Vincula, is memorable as the resting-place of many personages who have figured conspicuously in the annals of Britain. Here were buried, Fisher, Bishop of Rochester; the illfated wives of Henry VIII., Anne Boleyn and Catharine Howard; George, Lord Rochfort, the brother of the former princess; Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex; Lord Thomas Seymour, beheaded in 1549, in obedience to a warrant from his own brother, the Protector Somerset; the turbulent Duke of Somerset, who three years later suffered on the same scaffold to which he had sent his relative; John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland, the prime mover in Somerset's death, and who perished like his rival in 1153; Lord Guildford Dudley, husband of Lady Jane Grey; Sir Thomas Overbury; Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex; the Duke of Monmouth; and Lords Balmerino, Kilmarnock, and Lovat. The Horse Armoury is one of the attractive features of the Tower. In 1825, an apartment, 150 feet long, was constructed for the reception and better arrangement of this fine collection.
