Description

A crime you'll always remember. A detective you'll never forget.

A young girl is found dead. A prostitute is murdered. And the strangest, youngest detective in the South Wales Major Crimes Unit is about to face the fiercest test of her short career.

A woman and her six-year-old daughter are killed with chilling brutality in a dingy flat. The only clue: the platinum bank card of a long-dead tycoon, found amidst the squalor.

DC Griffiths has already proved herself dedicated to the job, but there's another side to her she is less keen to reveal. Something to do with a mysterious two-year gap in her CV, her strange inability to cry - and a disconcerting familiarity with corpses.

Fiona is desperate to put the past behind her but as more gruesome killings follow, the case leads her back into those dark places in her own mind where another dead girl is waiting to be found...

Review quote

Compelling...a new crime talent to treasure -- DAILY MAIL Fresh and compelling. The best thing coming out of this gem of a crime story is the promise of another -- NY DAILY NEWS This is on one level an orthodox, if expertly written, police procedural. But the character of Fiona lifts it to an altogether different, extraordinary level. She is childlike, brilliant, courageous and utterly loopy all at the same time - as well as devastatingly real and human and alone...She'll haunt you long after you finish this book, and send you scurrying to find what else Bingham has written. -- YORK PRESS Gripping...Fiona Griffiths kept me hooked to the last page and left me hungry for more -- RACHEL ABBOTT Fiona Griffiths is one of the most unusual and engaging characters in British crime fiction. Those who haven't yet encountered Fiona will be drawn into a beautifully crafted world -- SINEAD CROWLEY One of the most interesting and complicated protagonists in current UK crime fiction. Truly unforgettable -- MICK HERRON Compelling and claustrophic, Without a doubt, Fiona Griffiths is one of crime's most memorable heroines -- SARAH HILARY In a word - brilliant. One of the most enjoyable crime novels I've read in a while -- JAMES OSWALD Intriguing and compelling - I love Fiona Griffiths -- SHARON BOLTON Praise for gripping, atmosphere Fiona Griffiths crime thriller series:

Chilling, atmospheric and so gripping it hurts. You won't read a better crime novel this year -- MARK EDWARDS

About Harry Bingham

I'm Harry Bingham. I write crime novels and love it. When I'm not doing that, I run the Writers' Workshop, a literary consultancy. I live in Oxfordshire, England, but I spent a lot of my childhood in Wales, where my crime novels are set. Things I love apart from writing: wild swimming, rock-climbing, walking and dogs. I'm married, have four kids, and I love my life.

Our customer reviews

This is the book that introduces us to DC Fiona Griffiths of the South Wales Police and she certainly is not in the Miss Marple mode of female crime fighters. This may seem like yet another police procedual novel but this is more than that. We get introduced fo Griffiths with all her faults and mental health issues, a Cambridge graduate and the junior member of the CID based at Police HQ. Fiona Griffiths is not the usual literary detective and it is through the murder of a Janet Mancini a part - time prostitute and her daughter April along with finding the body of Stacy Edwards another prositute that she abilty to feel as if they are communicating and guiding her to solve their murder. It is a long journey with many twists and turns and the odd curve ball at the same time as solving the murder she confronts her own past. The setting also helps to set the book apart from other crime novels, it is not based in Cardiff and takes us to the Gower Peninsula, and other parts of beautiful South Wales. From the bordom of the paperwork to having to fight a Polish gangster hand to hand outside the Old Lighthouse. At the same time showing her softer side by organising and making sure people turn out to the funerals of the victims who otherwise would have been easily forgotten by all. Harry Bingham has introduced a wonderfully well written crime novel with a female heroine and a joy to read and recommendshow more
