Excerpt: ...The various ideas for pictures which I had already fondly cherished swarmed back into my fancy, and meanwhile my hands were turning over the pages of the paper and my eyes were glancing at random down the, columns. In this way, without really taking in their meaning, I skimmed through a part of the political news, and then passed on to the City Chronicle, a few paragraphs of curious happenings. Among the rest was the following: ACCIDENT. Today, at about half-past ten in the morning, the funeral of the young Countess of Bardoch, deceased at the age of twenty, was the occasion of one of those accidents which we are obliged unfortunately to deplore almost every day. The coffin was covered with white cloth and garlands of fresh flowers; the young girl friends of the countess followed upon foot, and then came the long line of carriages with friends and relatives of the family. The funeral procession, which in order to reach the cemetery of Nussdorf had taken the route along the Danube, was just passing the Rossauer Lande, where the street narrows and there is no parapet on the river side, when a lady, wishing to turn out of the way in a great hurry, fell headlong into the water and was carried a hundred yards or more downstream before she could be rescued. She was taken from the river unconscious; and since nothing could be found upon her to tell her name or her residence, she was at once hurried to the General Hospital. We have learned nothing further about her. She is said to have been young and beautiful. I had read the paragraph absentmindedly; but the last phrase caught my attention.
