"You are in search of employment," he said, and without awaiting her reply he added, "Go to this number," at the same time handling her a card with the name of Madame La Duchesse M cy, Faubourg Saint Germain, and, continued the stranger "Our Lady of Victories will guard you." When the young lady had raised her eyes from the card to thank him he had disappeared. Consulting her small timepiece she found that the hour was 9 o'clock, not too late, however, for the anxious girl to fulfill her mission. A brisk walk of twenty minutes brought her to the address of the duchesse, where the concierge, as he opened the porte cochere, regarded the strange girl with some curiosity. It was very unusual for a lady to enter there alone or even to arrive a pied and unaccompanied, after the dinner hour. The man directed the young girl to the grand staircase where she was met by a servant man in livery, who soon conducted her to an apartment magnificent in its artistic splendor. Satin upholstered furniture in orange color set off to advantage the rich ebony carvings of fauteuils, ottomans, chairs, lounges, etc. Marble statues, lifelike in appearance, stood on pedestals of Carrara marble; works of art, which had been purchased at enormous cost from the studios of Florentine and Roman sculptors; paintings of both ancient and modern artists were suspended from the lofty walls; many of these were historical, and portrayed wellknown episodes in French, Venetian, and Roman history, bronzes from Russia, China from Japan, draperies from the Orient.
