Welcome to the Learning Chair ... It wasn't much of a classroom. Subterranean, for one thing. And devoid of the raucous clamor and gleeful giggles that permeated most schools. This classroom held only one student. She was tied to a chair. And the chair was bolted to the floor. *** Waitress Susan Merrick awakens in the hospital, the victim of a savage beating, to discover that her seven-year-old daughter, Abby, has vanished. Held captive, Abby is being taught "life lessons" on a "learning chair" and she quickly learns the penalty for not being an apt pupil. Lieutenant Carolyn Latham must piece together the connection between a murder in Banff, Alberta, the apparent accidental death of an Oregon college student many years earlier, and the disappearance of Abby Merrick, before a most devious villain strikes again.

About Cathy Vasas-Brown

After teaching elementary school for several years, Cathy Vasas-Brown's thoughts drifted to murder, and in 2001, her first novel, Every Wickedness, was published by Doubleday Canada. It was nominated for an Arthur Ellis Award for best first crime novel. Cathy's second thriller, Some Reason in Madness, was published in 2004. Safe as Churches, the first in a series of books set in the fictional town of Cypress Village, Oregon, was released in 2013. It was followed by The Monitor in 2014. Though Cathy has been described as a writer who "shows a talent for great gore," she has a very soft spot for animals and enjoys spending time with her cats. When not writing, she along with her husband, Al, enjoys traveling, skiing, in-line skating, playing cards, cooking and going to concerts.
