THE CAPILLA REAL. 193 The Capilla Ileal almost constitutes a church by itself. Tt is highly interesting, as it contains the remains of St. Ferdinand, the Conquistador; the tombs of Don Alonzo the Learned and Queen Beatrix are also here; and in this chapel, too, lies the fair and notorious Maria de Padilla, the beloved of Pedro the Cruel. There are medallions here of Diego de Vargas and of Garci Perez. San Fernando's body is preserved in an Urna of silver. It is almost perfect, and is shown three times a-year, (in May, August, and November.) His sword is kept here, and, on his saint's-day, a martial sermon, called El de la Espada, is preached, expounding its great qualities. This Capilla has its own especial staff of clergy. The Sala Capitular (chapter-house), built by Riano, is elliptical in shape, and Plateresque in style. It is adorned with Ionic pilasters. Here shines forth one of Murillo's exquisite " Concepcions," and other triumphs of his brush. In a chapel at the eastern end, named Capilla de la Concepcion, are the remains of Gonzalo de Sepulveda, who endowed the September Octavo (in honour of the Inmaculada Concepcion) two hundred years ago. At this Octavo, and at Corpus, the Quiristers, or Seises, (six was their original number, ) with castanets in their hands, and hats decorated with waving and shadowing feathers on their heads, dance before the high altar--dressed, in fact, as court pages of the olden time, and presenting, to judge from the description, as well as from some representations of them I more
