Review Text

John and Mary appeared here last: year (Jones has written a number of other books which have not been imported) and this is a retrospective of a man's life through the experiences he would successfully shape into novels. While less confined, it is no deeper than the earlier book, just a plausibly urbane story executed with technical ease. The survivor is Martin Prescott, after a World War II aerial action takes the life of his co-pilot and close friend. He subsequently pursues that friend's girl - Cathy - whom he succeeds in marrying but never possessing. At her death, he is again a survivor, drifting into the right "kind of affairs" which are not casual but also not complete, and in which Martin remains an attentive, circumspect and uncommitted participant. As such, Martin might easily have authored this book which rather deemphasizes experience, almost as if it were written in an undertone. Agreeably to be sure. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
