Review Text

December 10, 1941, and Juan and Juanita, two Filipino-American children, are stranded in Cavite when their father is killed in action; they are also cut off from Dave Gannon, a young Navy machinist's mate, and joined by another derelict of the war, an American, Fowler, only temporarily in uniform and anxious to get away. The story which takes in a good deal of the Philippines' hard fought, short lived resistance, through the grim March of Death, moves with Juan and Juanita through leech-infested swamps and barries, under heavily shelled skies, to their final escape - with Gannon. It is comparable to his earlier The Survivor, an unimpeded narrative with strong action values and an authoritative, World War II background. Hup two three and over to boys whose sympathies will be engaged along with their attention. (Kirkus Reviews)
