Description

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ...a tender-hearted little lad--I am glad to say that for him--he took his pen up and stuck the handle into the ink to help the unfortunate insect to escape. This he succeeded in doing, and lifted him out of the ink in triumph. While engaged in this praiseworthy object, Maurice's hand shook a little, and the fly, overbalancing itself, fell upon the sheet of pothooks and hangers. You may imagine they were not improved by the arrival of the visitor. The fly, however, seemed to find the copybook a nice sort of free place to get rid of his ink upon, and accordingly commenced perambulating about over the pot-hooks, as if to give them a finishing touch. The result being anything but satisfactory, Maurice was just repenting having aided the fly to escape, when Miss Hunter appeared, and, as you may suppose, she was not gratified at the sight of the copy. Nor was this all: for Maurice's papa was also very angry, as Miss Hunter had often had to complain of his inattention and carelessness. "STOP THIEF!" AUNT JANE was going to have a garden party last July; and last July Lily and Maurice were staying at Aunt Jane's country house. This garden party was a source of great excitement to every one in and about the establishment, I must tell you. Such a number of people were to come! far more than could comfortably get into the house, although it is a goodsized one; but if it was a fine day, that would not matter, every one agreed, for the garden is very large, and the people would prefer to be out under the shady trees on the beautiful lawn to crowding into the house, surely! Now, as you may suppose, the two children were as eager as anybody to help in the bustle and preparation for the garden party. "I may do something to help, Auntie Jane?..".show more
