In regard to pasture, the Forest Officer appointed under section 5 or, failing such appointment, the Divisional Forest Officer must be consulted as to the number of cattle, the local pasture limjts, the season of pasture and the mode of exercise of the right, so that this may be as little injurious to the forest as possible. In regard to forest-produce, the same procedure is to be adopted and the Forest Officer to be consulted. The Settlement Officer must, rnc.eover, satisfy himself by careful enquiry that the quantity of produce granted is sufficient for, and not in excess of, the reasonable domestic and agricultural requirements of the right-holder. Save in exceptional circumstances 1 ton i.e., 50 cubic feet) of timber is a sufficient annual grant forihe repair and maintenance of an agriculturist's house, and not more than one head of cattle should be admitted to pasture on each three acres of forest land open to the exercise of a grazing right or privilege. The annual yield in timber per acre of forest land varies within such wide limits that it is impossible to lajr down any hard-and-fast rule in this regard. But the yield should be approximately estimated by the Forest Olhcer by inspection of the forest. It must be remembered, however, that such estimate must be pro portionately reduced if rights, such as grazing, tending to reduce the annual yield of timber, are recorded in the area set aside.for the exercise of the right to timber.
