Excerpt: ... atmosphere but slightly, and you are breathing nitrous oxide, or laughing-gas--a kind of aerial champagne--and the writer to whom we have referred imagines Mephistopheles, or some such demon, sitting astride upon a mountain, clapping his hands and screaming with laughter, to find, instead of a decorous assemblage of human beings, a whole population of harlequins and clowns all gaseously intoxicated; or, changing the proportion a little more, giving oxygon a little more the upper hand in the atmosphere, and the bland influence of nitrogen a little less felt, and there is a much more calamitous state of things; nitric oxide is created; the whole atmosphere is turned into a ferocious fluid, a virulent liquid, blistering all flesh, and blighting all vegetation. Now apply the same test to the world of waters; how easy to conceive an entire re-composition of tho waves--seas of nocuous or of perilous properties; and is it not very noteworthy to remember that water, the uncompromising enemy of fire, is quite remarkable for its fiery composition. Attempt to rearrange its elements, and you unloose chained giants from their chemical affinities, so that, if "xho earth and all that therein is" were to bo burned up, tho slightest alteration would change the ocean into a sea of fire, and, in an instant of time, comparatively, all that would be left of our planet would be a blackened cinder in space. Professor Tyndall, in his great work on neat, says that three days would be sufficient to consume the earth and all that therein is!
