Description

The denouement of Philip Winter's ill-begotten engagement to the feather-brained Rose Birkett is enacted in full view of Southbridge School's extended family during a holiday break. Evidence of Rose's empty head is plain to see when, at tea, "through sheer want of personality," she brings conversation to her own level and insists that Hamlet and Shakespeare are both names of plays, and most probably the same one. Everyone, including her own parents, is rooting for Philip's escape. What they couldn't have hoped for was that Rose, overwhelmed by the sheer dullness of being engaged, would break it off herself.show more

Review Text

It may have been noticed in these bulletins that we number Thirkell among our favorite enjoyments and so have had a fine time with this new one. You won't be bothered about plot, for the romances herein are unimportant as compared to the collection of characters you meet - amusingly described - the trivia of daily living - the recognized warfare between the youngsters and their elders. You will be entertained with Colin's attempts at teaching, his brushes with the other masters, and, of course, the boys; with his sister and her real and false romance, and the rest of his family and friends. It quietly wends its way, imposing no strain, but pleasantly delighting you with its wise and witty writing. (Kirkus Reviews)show more
