Under the first of these headings have been tabulated the amounts received by states in compensation for licenses granted under general statutes, other than liquor or other business licenses. Such licenses are granted without respect to the business which may be carried on by the licensee and include those granted to persons owning vehicles, irrespective of whether they are for business or pleasure, and those granted persons desiring fishing or hunting privileges. The tax on motor vehicles forms by far the most important item included among receipts of this class. For two states, as pointed out in the footnotes, receipts from dog licenses are included among general licenses.
