He was also susceptible of being put into deep sleep. I therefore thought the mother was susceptible to suggestion, and that her aphonia was either of nervous origin, or at least aggravated and kept up by the nervous diathesis. I hypnotize her; in a few seconds she is in somnambulism. I suggest the total disappearance of the aphonia; I make her talk in a loud voice. In a few minutes I wake her. To her great astonishment her voice has come back. She has remained cured of her aphonia. III. Neuropathic Affections. Observation XXIX.--Hysteriform symptoms.--Sensation of emptiness in the head and buzzing in the ear.--Moral inertia.--Rapid and almost total disappearance of these symptoms by hypnotic suggestion. S. N, a clerk in Paris, twenty-one years of age, came to consult me on April 12, 1886. His trouble began, he said, on January 2. He was in Paris, feeling rather sad and weary at having left the place which he held three weeks since. At half-past nine in the evening he had a sensation of chilliness in his chest and in his head, over the left eye, which lasted five minutes. He had gone to bed, but he got up and spent the night in his arm-chair, shivering and trembling. The next day he kept his room, and purged himself; in five or six days his discomfort had nearly ceased. About the 8th of January, in the night, he had a violent paroxysm of convulsions, unconsciousness, delirium, and agitation. The doctor was with him five hours. The seizure lasted until six o'clock in the morning (hysterical seizure).
