For in this way it is, that the affection for kinsfolk and friends, long since renounced, again rises up; ties are renewed, which destroy the contemplative serenity of life; and lastly, we may even say, without giving a harsh judgement, that the Religious person, who lives in abundance and in luxury, lives also without prayer and without the Spirit. Of all beyond this, which they may bring upon themselves, be God the Judge! How secular persons live under the guidance of their appetites and will, rather than of necessity, we may see every where. It would be a very large matter, to enter into all the evils and sins, which flow from this. I can say no more here, than that I advise each man to be an unsparing and rigorous judge to himself on this head; and let him be very careful, how he states his case to his confessor and spiritual adviser, remembering that an erroneous statement is followed by an erroneous opinion and a false cure. 2. A second rule is, to be careful to find out, and know well, what are the evils to which the body is chiefly inclined, and to enjoy with fear and trembling the use of b 1 Cor. xi. 20-22. those things to which it is especially addicted: for in those things it will be most liable to give way to excess, and at the same time most crafty in making out its inclination to be a virtue. 3. Another is, to keep your eye on the spiritual improvement of the soul, and to remember that, at best, you always do less than you might, and that it is only self-deceit which makes you think that you can do no more.
