Providing an account of the struggle for Crete during World War II, this book contains some of the author's own experiences as a Medical Officer at the time of the battle. The author describes the leadership, the geography, the communications problems and the delayed counter-attack. In the spring of 1941, prior to the invasion of Russia, Hitler's Air Division landed on Crete to secure the Nazis' southern flank. There they encountered a chance collection of New Zealanders, Australians, and British, survivors of the retreat from Greece.
