About Eknath Easwaran

Eknath Easwaran Contributor residences (city, state or country if outside the US or Canada): n/a Easwaran (eesh' warren) (1910-1999), a gifted teacher and one of the most respected authorities on mysticism in the world today, wrote the best-selling classic Meditation and 25 other books on spiritual living which have been translated into 22 languages. Easwaran was a professor of English literature in India and an acclaimed writer and lecturer when, at the peak of his success, he plunged into an intense search for meaning that led to his method of passage meditation, ideally suited to a busy life in the modern world. Easwaran came to the U.S. as a Fulbright scholar in 1959 and soon decided to move, as he put it, "from education for degrees to education for living." He founded the Blue Mountain Center of Meditation in Berkeley, California, in 1961 and began teaching his Eight Point Program of meditation for solving physical and emotional problems, releasing deeper resources, and pursuing life's highest goal, self-realization. In 1967-68, at the University of California, Berkeley, Easwaran taught the first academic course on meditation ever offered for credit at a major American university. He taught meditation and spiritual living to North American audiences regularly for almost forty years. Easwaran's writing is clear and contemporary, his approach practical and universal. His insights come from basing his life on what he teaches.
