And now, my dear friend, I return for a moment to the little story with which I commenced this chapter. Like the child to whom I there referred, you also have sometimes regarded yourself as too fragmentary to be of much use in the world. I have striven to show you that fragments are of use, and therefore, even if you are only a fragment, you must have both a place and a purpose as such. But is it quite necessary that you should remain a fragment? If your character is at present very imperfect, cannot God's grace render it complete? Ask Him to fill up the irregularities of your character, and to smoothe out all its crumplings, so that you may become a fair and even Bhcet of paper on which Jesus shall write so much about Himself that you may be a "living epistle, known and read of all men." And, as a means to an end, I am quite sure that the way to become less of a fragment yourself is, by God's help, to resolve that you will never forget to gather up the fragments that are lying around you. One thought more. If you are a true disciple of Jesus you must expect to be despised by the world as if you were only a fragment. They will consider you as of no account. In their eyes you will seem small and poor and contemptible. But God can make use of you. And He will do so. It is just His own way of proceeding. Read 1 Cor. i. 27, 28. And He will gather up the fragments too. He will "gather the lambs" (Isa. xl. 11). Here is a sweet promise for orphans, "The Lord will gather me" margin' (Psa. xxvii. 10).
