The sides of the MATRIX are slotted to fit between the teeth of the Comes, which carry the MATRIX in rows in the MATRIX CASE. The back of the COMB and two of its teeth enclose the MATmx on three sides while the back of the next Comn closes up the fourth side. This exercise is set the same as any ordinary piece of straight matter, except that, before setting, the width of both the initial and the cut must be ascertained in ems and units of the same set as the face of type used for the rest of the composition. The allowance for initials and cuts is set in either quads or characters, characters preferred, if they are to be lifted out and replaced by the initial or Cut, because they are more convenient for the compositor to lift out to drop in the cut or initial. If, however, the cut is unmounted, quads must be set in to serve as a base. The instructions state that the cap I is a 24-point initial, I2 points wide, and that the cut is II picas wide and I6 picas deep. The width to be allowed for any cut or initial is determined from the set-size; and the depth, to be allowed, from the point-size. Therefore, look up the equivalent of I2 points in 8%-set for the initial, and the equivalent of II picas in 8 %-set for the cut. The allowance for the initial in 8%-set will be I em 7 units. Strike I em 7 units and mark olI exactly where the POINTER stops on the EM SCALE, and write on the SCALE the number of units the mark is "off the WHEEL."
