In 1987, Arab militias viciously attacked Bol Gai's village, murdered most of his village's citizens, enslaved his family, and took their land. Bol Gai was abducted with more than seven hundred children and enslaved in the western part of Sudan. At the age of seven years old, he was sold on the Arab slave market, and forced to follow the Islamic religion as a slave. Some of his family are still enslaved today. As portrayed in this true story, after years in shackles as a slave, Bol Gai was finally able to escape to Egypt, where he found the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Services. He explained his case to INS, and they allowed him to come to the United States legally to escape the horrors of radical Islam. Bol Gai was sponsored by a Christian church and now lives with an American family in Richmond, VA, where he graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University, with a double major in Political Science and Homeland Security.
