This individual, being infuriated at the admiral's refusal to execute some orders he had given, struck that functionary in the face, drawing blood thereby, and for this outrage the wounded man demanded that his assailant should be punished. But Faliero answered him bitterly, "What would you that I do for you? See the shameful words written of me, and the way in which the ribald Michael Steno, who wrote them, is punished. And what respect had the Forty for our person?" F His petitioner, with an opprobrious epithet for the council, assured him that if he had only the heart to undertake such a project, he, the admiral, would undertake to make Marino Faliero sole lord of Venice, when he might revenge himself as he pleased. "How," said the Doge, "can such a thing be done?" Whereupon his tempter proceeded to open his scheme, and it was discussed between them in company with the old man's favourite nephew, Bertuccio. The result of their colloquy was, that they proceeded to summon, on the spot, two men known to the admiral for secretness and cunning, Filippo Calendaro, a seaman, and Bertuccio Israello; and with these confederates arranged secret meetings, to be held by night in the Ducal palace, several other associates being added to their traitorous assembly.
