To this may be added eight applications for membership The Nast Brothers' Lime & Stone Company. of Marblehead, near Fond-du-Lac, VVis., have just closed a contract for the complete electrification of their plant to replace steam, which has been the means of power since the company has been in existence. The company will purchase the current, which will amount to 440 volts, and this will operate machines generating a total of 300 horsepower. The individual motors will vary from 15 to 50 horsepower. The lighting current will be cut down to 110 volts. All wiring will be of conduit construction; that is, all wires enclosed in steel pipes, the last word in safety and modern electrical construction. It is expected that the work will be completed in two months. State Gives Sand and Gravel Leases Lease rights on sand and gravel in the bed of the Villamette River between the Oswego bridge and the Hawthorne bridge in Portland have been granted by the Oregon state land board to five Portland companies, namely, the Diamond O. Navigation Company, Nickum & Kelly Sand 8: Gravel Company, Columbia Digger Company, Columbia Contract Company, and the Star Sand & Gravel Company. The lease covers a period of five years, the lessees to pay the state at the rate-of ten cents per cubic yard for all sand or gravel taken from the river under the contract, with a minimum of 10,000 cubic yards to be used by each company per year. The Lavery Granite Company, of 103 Park Avenue, New York, has purchased the four-story dwelling at 243 East Forty-fourth Street, just west of Second Avenue.
