Review Text

The best thing about this debut mystery is the refreshing reluctance of its heroine, New York photographer Libby Kincaid, to acknowledge that she's in a detective story. When she gets word that her brother Avery has shot himself in backwoods Darby, Ohio, she's grief-stricken, not suspicious; she regards Avery's friends Ted Dallas and Dan Sikora as helpers, not suspects; she takes her romantic involvement with Sikora as a comfort, not a plot device; she doesn't jump to the conclusion that the disappearance of Ted's stepson Kevin Kogut is connected to Avery's death; it's not until her narrow escape from a fire set at Avery's house that she's convinced he was killed because he knew too much about somebody fouling his fishing stream by dumping toxic waste in a nearby mineshaft. Well, somebody was dumping toxic waste in that mineshaft, and if you want to know who - one of two tiny surprises that Tucker (Greetings from New York: A Visit to Manhattan in Postcards) has saved for last - you'll just have to read this sensitive, underplotted book.
