If, for instance, the educational year ended on 30th September, and the School Year ended on 31st August, the figures shown under 1903-4 would be those for the educational year, ending on 30th September 1902, not for that ending on 30th September 1903. Any change of educational year is therefore liable to produce a discrepancy in the statistics; and tho figures for successive years cannot safely be compared with one another. Notes on Individual Tables. The difficulty will disappear in future, as the grants for instruction in special subjects will in all cases be in respect of the year ending 31st July. Table 15. 1. When a department contains both Infants (with an average attendance of not less than 20) and other scholars, it is treated as consisting of two divisions, each of which appears separately in this Table. The total number of departments or divisions comprised under head 1 of this Table therefore exceeds the number of departments, as given in Table 7 (1), by the number of departments for infants and other scholars, as given in Table 7 (1) (6). The average attendance shewn under head 1 of the present Table comprises both the actual average attendance and also the additional average attendance allowed as shown under heads 3 and 4 of Table 11. 2. As regards Grants for Instruction in Special Subjects, see note to Table 13 above. 3. The Special Grant of 10 is made in addition to the Grants of 10 or 15 shown immediately above (in the Table), and is only paid when certain special conditions as to Staff are satisfied.
