Description

Excerpt from State of Connecticut Register and Manual, 1967: Prepared Pursuant to Sec. 3-90 of the General Statutes, Revised to 1966 by Secretary of the State; Published by the State Under the Authority of Sec. 4-119 of the General Statutes, Revised to 1966 The Governor Winthrop Olde Towne Mill of New London stands in the midst of the bustling harbor city of New London. It is a constant reminder of the zealous char acter and inherent pride of the founders of this state. The mill, shown at the left in the photograph on the opposite page, is believed to be the oldest mill in existence in the United States still capable of grinding corn. The old mill wheel is intact, and the two sets of grinding stones and cob-grinder, used for generations in the making of cattle fodder, are still able to perform the chores for which they were intended.
