After George Lucas finished work on 2005's Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, he wanted to look back on the now-completed Star Wars Saga through an entirely new point-of-view: isolating stills, or frames, from each of the six Star Wars films, focusing on them intensely as works of photography and design and reproducing them in a book. For two years, Lucas went through more than 200,000 frames per film, eventually editing more than a million frames down to the 1,416 images that now comprise Star Wars: Frames, an essential part of the Saga and a testament to the hard work, craftsmanship and dedication evident in every frame of every film. Within the pages of Frames, iconic and unexpected moments from each film reveal abstractions and deepen appreciations of the films' artistry. Star Wars: Frames, previously available only as a $3,000 limited edition, presents these stills in a new, lower-priced edition, bringing together Lucas's personal shot-by-shot selections from all six Star Wars films into a lavishly designed two-volume hardcover set-one volume for the Original Trilogy and one volume for the Prequel Trilogy. For collectors and fans, Star Wars: Frames is a more affordable edition of this grand project devoted to the art and craftsmanship of a cinematic phenomenon-an essentially photographic and yet filmic, look at the cinema of George Lucas, printed with the highest production values-the ultimate Star Wars book and collector's piece.

The set contains:
- A vellum dedication page bound into volume one signed and numbered by George Lucas.
- Six leather-bound volumes (11 inches x 22 inches wide) one for each episode in the "Star Wars" saga, contained in two chambers that correspond to the first and second "Star Wars" trilogies. Each chamber rests on air gliders that extend from the case when light pressure is applied.
- More than 230 film frames per volume correspond to each epic "Star Wars" film: "The Phantom Menace," "Attack of the Clones," "Revenge of the Sith," "A New Hope," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi," totaling 1,416 images. Lucas selected each image from over a million possible film frames in the original reels.
- Two specially crafted embossed medallions (6 3/4" round) that represent the poles of the Force in the Star Wars saga: Jedi Master Yoda and Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader.
- A handmade Arts & Crafts maple-wood case (24" long x 13" high x 15" wide) holds both book chambers
This landmark collection of images represents a unique opportunity for collectors and cinephiles to obtain a superbly crafted artifact of the "Star Wars" epics--offering the closest thing to having the actual film reels from "Star Wars." Representative of Lucas' personal reflection on each film, "FRAMES" is an inimitable memoir of his magnum opus.

Review quote

"Cinematography is not about technology. It's about art, it's about taste. In the end it's about understanding your craft."

""FRAMES" is about allowing the reader the time and the space to examine fully that ("cinematography") craft."
